Premature Ejaculation and Zoloft
Recently, a study was done with roughly 3000 monogamous men, testing to see what kind of results they would have controlling premature ejaculation with SSRI inhibiting drugs. One such drug happens to be Zoloft, a widely prescribed depressing medication. Approximately two hours before having intercourse, these men took either a dose of the medication, or a dose of a placebo pill. In conjunction with their partners and a stopwatch, the men then timed their abilities to perform without ejaculation. The findings were rather surprising. While there was some degree of evidence for the psychological factor (even the men taking the placebo were able to last almost a minute longer than they had been able to prior to taking the pill), there was far more evidence in support of an actual improvement. Those who had taken the actual pill increased their climax time almost three-fold.
Serotonin and PE
Zoloft belongs to a group of drugs known as SSRIs. This stands for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. It, along with Paxil and Prozac, have long been used in the treatment of depression by regulating the amount of serotonin in the bloodstream and in the brain. Many studies have shown that this imbalance in this serotonin level is also a key factor in why many men experience premature ejaculation. The low levels of serotonin combined with the high level of pleasure in sexual intercourse proves too much to overcome and climax is achieved very quickly. The bridge between the two states is too great.
Improvement in the Sex Life
By taking an SSRI such as Zoloft, men can experience longer lasting sexual intercourse by regulating their serotonin production. In addition, they will often feel a sense of overall well being if they are experiencing low serotonin levels and this has led to depression and a general feeling of being tired. Of course, if depression isn’t a factor, this regular increase in the production of serotonin can create an imbalance that wasn’t there previously, and can lead to a psychological dependence on the drug.
The Drawbacks
SSRI medications come with a host of side effects. Nausea, headaches, diarrhea, and dizziness have been reported as very common side effects of taking Zoloft. Usually, these side effects subside after the first couple of weeks of taking the drug. However, it should be noted that there has been some evidence that Zoloft can create an increase in suicidal thoughts for the depressive individual. This would seem to be somewhat contrary, but it has been reported frequently enough that it is a known and labeled side effect.
Natural Alternatives
For those who wish to get a boost in serotonin levels without the messy side effects, they might want to look at an herbal supplement known as Climinax. Climinax uses all natural ingredients to improve serotonin levels and treat the condition of premature ejaculation. It also uses Vitamin B to improve life and promote a feeling of well being. Many men are turning to such natural alternatives, as they do not wish to find themselves a slave to antidepressants for the duration of their lives, but want to retain a sense of sexual independence.
